Governor Newsom calls for Californians to stay home except for essential needs
Stay updated at the official California state website on COVID-19.
The California State Public Health Officer and Director of the California Department of Public Health is ordering all individuals living in the State of California to stay home or at their place of residence, except as needed to maintain continuity of operation of the federal critical infrastructure sectors, critical government services, schools, childcare, and construction, including housing construction.
Read the full Executive Order here (pdf).
How long will we stay home?
This goes into effect on Thursday, March 19, 2020. The order is in place until further notice. Travel increases your risk of getting COVID-19 and infecting others. For this reason, the California Department of Public Health asks that you limit your travel during the pandemic.
What can I do? What’s open?
Essential services will remain open such as:
- Gas stations
- Pharmacies
- Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants
- Banks
- Laundromats/laundry services
Essential state and local government functions will also remain open, including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.
Some travel is considered essential and necessary. “Essential travel” is travel associated with the operation, maintenance, or usage of critical infrastructure or otherwise required or expressly authorized by law (including other applicable state and local public health directives), including:
- Critical infrastructure (like the water supply or power grid)
- Economic services (like banking)
- Supply chains (like food distribution)
- Health care and immediate medical care
- Safety and security
- Work and study
Currently BOTH San Bernardino and Riverside Counties are under Regional Stay Home Orders.
Residents are required to stay at home as much as possible and minimize mixing to reduce unnecessary exposure, while still being able to do important things like go to the doctor, buy groceries, pick up takeout, go on a hike, or worship outdoors. More details can be found here.

Progressive Alliance of the Inland Empire.
Individuals and organizations united for positive change.
Connect with others.
Bring your organization to the table.
Build community power for the common good.
For decades, our regional area has been politically unorganized and our nonprofit and service sector has been underdeveloped. After the 2012 Presidential Election and Obama's reelection but with countless losses at the local level, Catalina’s List created a plan to find, recruit, and train progressive women for civic engagement. At the same time, we developed a capacity-building project called the Progressive Alliance of the Inland Empire.
The goals of the Progressive Alliance are to serve as a connection hub for progressive leaders; small and large community organizations; groups; and non-profit service organizations to support their contributions in the context of a larger movement of justice, empowerment and peace.
Members of the Progressive Alliance help to sustain the organizational work in a co-operative model - sharing resources and tools in order to maximize our combined impact and towards a collaborative effort in the movement for economic, environmental, social and racial justice. We are an ally of the California Progressive Alliance network which held its first statewide conference in 2019.
